Chasing Waterfalls in the Big South Fork

Spring is a time of warmer temperatures and additional rainfall which means waterfalls and wildflowers in our area. One of the best loops for seeing an abundance of both is the Yahoo Falls Loop in the Big South Fork River & National Recreation Area. The highlight of this 10 mile loop is Yahoo Falls, the tallest waterfall in Kentucky at 113 feet and visible at both the beginning and the end of this route. Hike it on the right day after sufficient rainfall and you will be rewarded with several more waterfalls along the way. Spring also brings a brilliant display of wildflowers especially along the Sheltowee Trace/Big South Fork River section. Throw in two arches, Yahoo and Markers, and very moderate elevation gain/loss and you have one of the best hiking and backpacking loops in our area.
