Summer is now upon us and we get a lot of questions at the store about sun protective clothing. What makes clothes sun protective and why is it important?
Part of sunlight includes rays of invisible ultraviolet radiation and overexposure to these rays can cause sunburn, premature aging of skin and skin cancer.
All clothing protects us to some extent from these harmful rays, but the best protective garments have been given a UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) rating between 15 and 50. A rating of 15 is considered good and a rating of 50 is the best, blocking out 98% of UV radiation.
UPF is similar to SPF, the rating system for sunscreen products, but UPF rates the fabric’s effectiveness at blocking out both UVA and UVB rays. An SPF rating notes only the protection agains UVB, the sun-burning segment of the UV spectrum. There are actually three types of UV rays that exist. UVA causes premature skin aging and skin cancer, penetrating more deeply into the skin than UVB rays. These rays
will have an affect on skin during all hours of daylight and can penetrate clouds and untreated glass. UVB causes sunburn as well as premature skin aging and skin cancer. These rays have the most impact between 10am and 4pm and can penetrate clouds, but not glass. UVC is deadly to humans but is absorbed by atmospheric gases before it reaches the earth’s surface.
There are several factors that make clothing sun protective. Fabric that has a tighter weave minimizes the space between fibers and therefore minimizes the amount of UV radiation that can go through. Synthetic fibers like polyester and nylon, because of the polymer make-up, disrupts UV light better than natural fibers like cotton and wool. Dyes also play a role in deflecting UV light, with pigment dyes giving the most protection. Sometimes chemicals are added during the processing of fabrics to help absorb UV light.
Whether we are on the trail or in the water, it is important to protect ourselves against the harmful UV rays. We carry many brands here at J&H that are UPF rated, from performance t-shirts and long-sleeved button-up shirts with extended collars to quick-drying lightweight pants and hats. Most items have hang tags with the UPF rating, but some do not so be sure to ask one of our sales associates if you have any questions!

Hydroflask Stainless Steel water bottles have been in our shop now for a couple years. They are double wall insulated 18/8 stainless steel bottles that are all bpa free. They aren’t like your regular water bottles in that they are insulated like a thermos… but they aren’t bulky like your typical thermos either.
With myself being the eternal skeptic, I had to put the “keeps things cold for 24 hours and keeps things hot 12 hours” slogan to the test. I loaded the bottle with ice cubes and water and put it in my car the night before I was headed out to the Gorge on a day with the heat index around 100 degrees. The next evening after leaving the bottle in my hot car all day without the windows cracked, I was pleasantly surprised when I picked up the bottle to hear ice still slushing around inside the bottle. Needless to say, I was thrilled to have something cold for the drive back to town.
When I tried the 12 hour hot test, I got a little bit antsy about it and paid the price with a burnt tongue. Any true coffee addict knows that you can’t have coffee 12 hours without drinking it. Since temptation consistently messed up the results of this test I’ll give you my best test results to date. I took my coffee and poured it from the coffee maker into the hydroflask and sealed it immediately. I decided after an hour of trying to sip it to leave the lid off. The coffee stayed piping hot with the lid off from 8:30 am until noon when it finally cooled down enough to polish it off. Bottom line, I think this could handle 12 hours sealed, no problem.
The Bandi belt is an exciting new item that just hit our sales floor two weeks ago. It is the perfect accessory for running, hiking, traveling, or those days when you don’t want to carry a purse. The Bandi is made from soft spandex fabric (like swimwear) that stretches and conforms to the body. It is available in over 40 colors and patterns and will easily match your running or yoga apparel. The main pocket is divided to keep your phone separate from your cash and cards, and the unique fold over design keeps the contents secure. The side pocket is perfect for keys or coins. It is really comfortable to wear and is definitely a more modern, stylish twist on the traditional fanny pack. The Bandi retails at $28.00 and would be a great gift for mom this Mother’s Day!

I am pretty excited about this new headlamp from Black Diamond. The Revolt headlamp hit our shelves early in January and immediately sold out. Boasting 110 lumens with regular batteries and 90 with the rechargeable batteries (both of which are included!) is plenty light output for even the most demanding needs. The great thing about the rechargeable batteries is that there is no need for an adapter or a separate unit to charge the batteries. There is a small USB port on the side that will plug into your average cell phone charger and charge the batteries right through the headlamp. If the rechargeable batteries die and you are in the middle of nowhere, you can just replace them with regular batteries and keep on moving. You would think all of this new technology would take the price really high, but the Revolt comes in at $59.95.
Black Diamond has been cranking out many uniquely designed headlamps over the last few years. They have built a name for themselves in the lighting world. The thing that initially caught my eye concerning all Black Diamonds headlamps is the dimmer switch. I have had plenty of headlamps that have a high beam/low beam option, but none that dim in the same manner. All of the sleek new designs Black Diamond has put out on the market over the last few years has really created a buzz.
If you are looking for a gift for the gadget guy/gal in your life, a new headlamp with rechargeable technology can always be a good addition. Whether they are scratching their way up a first ascent of a mountain deep in the Himalaya range or reading about someone else’s adventure from the comfort of an armchair in a da
